Virginie Arantes is a doctoral candidate and FNRS research fellow in the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Upon receiving a BA and a MA in Chinese Studies at Minho University (Portugal), she decided to pursue a MA programme in Environmental Management and Sciences at the Université de Liège, Belgium, in the Faculty of Sciences. Her aim was to acquire more insight on environmental issues in order to fuse together two very specific topics: Chinese Studies and Environmental issues.
Her research focuses on the rise of environmental social activism and its relevance to contemporary Chinese politics, with a special focus on grassroots environmental NGOs and social enterprises in Shanghai. More generally, she is interested in socio-political issues, the development of non-state actors and the concept of « civil society » in contemporary China.
